Papanicolaou test

Suan says maybe this is not a good topic to be blogging about. I agree. With Suan that is. But, i also know that most of you guys (if you anything like me) have not had this test yet! If that is so, you (like me) are 8 years too late. Doc said you were suppose to start at 21 (some even tell me at age 18), and it should be an annual test - especially if your family has a history of cancer genes.

Anyway, i went for my first test (8 years too late) day before yesterday. And btw, i hate doctors.. of any kind. (I dont really hate them, but stay away from them as much as i could). My gyny (not sure if that is how its spelled) is a Vietnamese lady in her mid-30s. (I insisted on a female doc). The test really wasnt as bad as ppl describe it to be. The actual test took about 2 minutes.. tops! The doc did talk alot though. And, when the nurse, who did pre-consultation, realized it was my first, she mentioned they have special instruments (aka not so big and not metal). So, do ask for it.

Also, the latest (not so breaking) news is that there is a vaccine for cervical cancer called Gardisil. And, btw, 300,000 women around the world each year die of cervical caner... so, don't take this lightly and go to the test. :)

I dont think that it was too much info. it is essential for us girls to know these things. and al was very good at not being too graphic about the whole thing.

cheers to the pap smear, i say!

Lara is right. And there is no harm knowing, right? If in the end it will help you.

I already feel very guilty postponing it for sooo long - especially since cancer runs in my family. It really hit home for me when a collegue's 30-year old daughter went for the scan and found a 3 inch tumor. Scared me shitless! She is now waiting for biopsy results and will be going in for surgery to remove it next month. She will also be out on disability for at least 3 months to recover from the surgery. That is if the tumor is not malignant.

Like Lara said, Cheers to the Smear!
